The Tyee and The Escapist are two fine online publications. They are usually very well-written, focused, and have high production values. Subscribe to their RSS feeds. You won’t be disappointed.
Well, Valentine’s Day was last week. The topic du’jour seems to be how the chicks dig the geeks. The Tyee published an article called Why We Love the Geeks and The Escapist published an article called My Gamer Lady.
Geekdom seems to have been normalized over the last few years. Hollywood has busted out some geeky films Gaming has hit the mainstream. There are geek-rock bands like Weezer. Everyone carries around a gadget of some sort; a cellphone, iPod, Blackberry, PSP, etc.
I was walking from work the other day to grab a cup of coffee and there was a chick on her cellphone talking about how she uses Google Mail and is trying to figure out how to get Google Talk to work over her cellphone. I was walking by the Herman Miller store which made it all the more surreal. If you are talking loudly on your cellphone, yes I am eavesdropping on you.
But, in general, I don’t find that talking about geek stuff with girls is the best pick-up tactic. I have no idea where Jennifer Selk from The Tyee really did here research. I believe she writes for Dose too, so I’m not giving her the benefit of the doubt.
I don’t really consider myself a geek. I haven’t watched the first 3 Star Wars episodes. I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons. I don’t like sci-fi. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll talk your ear off about gaming. But I tend not to do that in front of girls. I’m just as comfortable talking about shoes, astrology, feelings and other girly crap. I find that girls are more open to those types of conversations.
My whole take on it is that geekiness isn’t really that sexy. Geeks just make a whole lot more money than the usual dickweeds that girls go out with. Now money, I haven’t found one girl that thinks money is not sexy.

yo wft happened to my last comment??? did you delete it or something?
anyway, i just thought this was funny: tonight’s elimidate was a geek episode, 4 geeky guys. it was pretty rad, especially cause the girl picked the geekiest one of them all…
I didn’t delete it. I moderated it as accepted. Then it dissapeared. Don’t ask me. I’ll paste it below.
Originally, by Midge:
“dude, have you ever TRIED geekiness as a tactic? whatever you’re doing now isn’t workin that great, so really, what do you have to lose? geeks ARE hot. why? cause they are smarter than a lot of guys, and since a lot of them grew up geeky, they are a lot more sensitive to boot. seriously, other than having to listen to a lot of technology talk, and having to occasionally drag the geek away from the computer, there are very few downsides to dating a geek.”
Tactic? I don’t use tactics. You’re making this too complicated. It’s simple, smile, smell good, wear nice shoes, smile, and say hi.
Walk up and light-heartedly make fun of the girl. The verbal equivalent of pulling a girls hair on the playground. It’s the universal sign of endearment.
Ask for her number and then get the hell out of there before she can change her mind. Works almost every time.
And whatever I’m doing is actually working great for me. It’s just not what you would consider great.
Just like I tell my parents. I haven’t found a good girl, but I’ve found a lot of bad girls.
And I thought I’ve been over how I’m really not that geeky. Other than the whole sit in front of a computer too long part.
i see… well then… keep up the good work!
